A Phonograph found in Amnesia: Justine.

Phonographs (or gramophones) can be found in various places in all Amnesia games up to date.

Amnesia: JustineEdit

Justine put the phonographs there to be able to communicate with herself while she was in the Cabinet of Perturbation.

Phonograph in the CellEdit

This phonograph can be found in the cell at the very start of the game.

Justine - "Bienvenue, you are now listening to the sound of my disembodied voice. It will serve you no purpose to look for me, for this is a voice from the past.

I bid you welcome to my Cabinet of Perturbation. it is my study of the human psyche - specifically yours. A set of recordings have been prepared to chaperone you through the chambers ahead.

There are a few parts to this study and it is up to you - not only to pass, but figure out what elements are important. Please go on, move into the next chamber. Just remember they can all be saved, there is always a way."

Phonograph in the Cell CorridorEdit

((You need the Wax Cylinder to be able to use this phonograph))
This Phonograph can be found in the corridor after you drop down from the narrow tunnels in the Cells.

Justine - "*Laughter* Speak into the phonograph, Basile, mon chéri."

Basile - [groans] "What did you put into the wine?"

Justine - "Absinthe, silly Basile, strong men like you don't drink wine - wine is for helpless women like myself."

Basile - "My head, what is this thing, get me out. I'm not up for your games."

Justine - "No, you have to say it first. How beautiful am I?"

Basile - "Plenty, now let me out of this thing?"

Justine - [angrily] '"No, that is not what you say!"

Basile - [annoyed groan] '"Your beauty is blinding."

Basile - [screams in pain] '"Aah! My eyes! What have you done to my eyes!? Justine, this isn't funny, you blinded me!"

Justine - "Ha-ha, you can't catch me now!"

Basile - "I'll kill you, you whore!"

Phonograph in Cell Torture RoomEdit

This phonograph can be found in the cell area, in the room to the left just after you drop down from the tunnels in the roof. It is very close to the second Phonograph.

Justine - "Congratulations for coming this far, I am so excited for you. I do hope you managed to save Monsieur Fournier. He was a friend and a colleague of my papa, you know. Friendly fellow, a real bon garçon, but frail of mind. he puts up an impressive front, but it is all an act, I assure. Please go on, we are just getting started."

Phonograph near Library Entrance Edit

This phonograph can be found just as you enter the library.

Justine - "On this next piece you should be looking for some divine inspiration. Time to delve into your spiritual side. What do you see? Is the man begging for mercy or is he being blessed? Perhaps both! Father used to say, there were no right answers. Have the light guide you."

Phonograph in Library StaircaseEdit

This phonograph can be found halfway down the stairs to the basement area beneath the library.

Justine - "I wonder, is father David with his God now? Maybe you helped him there. Don't you worry, I'm sure he didn't have a family, he probably wasn't even all that well-liked. With the current political climate, I'm surprised someone hadn't killed him already.

We can't all be saved. Some don't even want to be saved. Yes. That is a comforting thought. Saves us from trying."

Phonograph near Dungeon EntranceEdit

This phonograph can be found just as you enter the dungeon.

Justine - "I'm sure you have figured out how it all works by now. Are you enjoying my quips? I think they are quite clever. Not that I ever was much of a conversationalist, poetry has always been my forte. But I digress. You should press on, it will all be over soon. Also, the police are here, maybe they can help you."

Phonograph near the Crypt EntranceEdit

This phonograph can be found just as you enter the Crypt.

Justine - "Inspector Marot, are you still with us? I'm looking forward to see if you managed to save him or not. I know very little about him, but surely he had a family, don't you think? Poor, poor, fatherless children. But he falls on his own sword. His kind is not meant to come for people like me.

Laws are made for cretins. The aristocracy doesn't need to know right from wrong. We are always right."

Phonograph at Crypt TunnelsEdit

This phonograph can be found right before you enter the narrow hallways in the Crypt.

Justine - "Well done. You have triumphed - conquered my cabinet. I wish I could tell you how you did, but alas this is a recording. You will have to figure it out all by yourself.

Did anyone survive? The doctor? The priest? Or perhaps the police man. Who was allowed to live? Why?

You should really reflect on these past events and consider what they meant to you, what you have learned about your true nature.

Father never knew me. He thought he did, but then he was frightened and nothing was ever the same again. I can still see him, lying there on the floor, he looked so surprised.

-- The star-shaped soapstone stained by his blood, fell to the floor with a sonorous thud. Blame me not, for I was but a child, with careful ambition I dared a smile --

Rest in peace, papa."

Phonograph taped to dummy in ceilingEdit

This phonograph is found in the crypt - right at the end of the game, taped to the dummy in the ceiling.

Justine - "And so it comes to an end. Now that you have seen what you truly are, you are able to go on and face eternity without fear - without doubt."

The Dark DescentEdit

There is one Phonograph to be found in The Dark Descent. It is in the Study, at the room to the right just as you enter it. Note that as of version 1.2, the phonograph will not be there if you have completed Justine.

"Daniel, you killed me! You took my life away!

If only you'd realize what you've done, what violence you've forced upon history! You have to make it right, you selfish old boy! I am offering you redemption, but I need you to give me the answers. Save yourself or guilt, tell me at once!

The man who escaped death in Grenoble, who is he? Who is hunting you, and who is the banished one? You laughed when I told you I would call on Gabriel for help. You know him! Where did you meet him? You are slipping, your mind is questioning my existence! My request is sincere, Daniel, this is all real! Where did you leave your sister?

Daniel, you are going mad! Go home, call on her, ask her name? And let her bring you home to England. Listen, if there is any will in you left, answer my questions and let them make a name for yourself!"

The person speaking is most likely the young girl Daniel killed in the Storage rooms, as evidenced in one of his flashbacks when she tells Daniel she will call on Gabriel for help. The message is most likely an elaborate hallucination, and was later removed from the game for an unknown reason.

Amnesia: A Machine for PigsEdit

Oswaldphonograph

Phonograph in the HallEdit

Found at Mansion part 1, in a room full with paintings on the wall.

Mandus- "You don't mind if I record this, do you? I find it most useful."

Professor A "Ah, you have one of those wonderful de Martinville's? No, of course not, my dear fellow."

Mandus - "It's my own design, Professor, along with everything you see."

Professor A - "Most useful. You understand, of course, why the Ministry sent me? That they have concerns?"

Phonograph in the Parlor/Game RoomEdit

Found sitting on the parlor table.

Professor A - "I must say my dear man, you look awful."

Mandus - "Yes, I seem to have picked up something rather nasty in Mexico."

Professor A - "I do understand. What you have been through... a lesser man would have crumbled. Yet you have made all of this. Your great factory, your charities, it is a wonder. For one man alone..."

Mandus - "It will all be made clear Professor. But first, a drink?"

Phonograph in the CellarEdit

Found near the Decontamination Chamber entrance.

Professor A - "Extraordinary, quite extraordinary. And you built it all. Good God man, you have been busy."

Mandus - "It is wonderful how tragedy focuses the mind. What else was I to do? Fall into grief, pine and fade in my hopelessness? Why not then simply die in that jungle amongst those dead temples."

Phonograph in the ChurchEdit

Found in the back room at the Church, near the staircase.

Mandus - "Your faith shackles your vision Professor, it is an iron coffin that keeps you from grasping the future. We require a new deity, one of steam and the wheel, of magnetism and progress. The old God is nothing more than a lamed hog, spitting back offal at mankind."

Phonograph in the FactoryEdit

Found at the Factory entrance, on a table with a lit lamp.

Mandus - "These men, Professor, these so-called men of vision! They would shackle the masses to a wheel and turn it until their backs break. All for that opiate, the lure of profit. These fools who lackey them, these priests, these officials, this... government. They make pigs of us all!"

Professor A - "But what solution, my dear man, how to break a cycle. You cannot simply remove the promise of a better world for these unfortunates. In the workhouses, in the orphanages, the belief in heaven is surely the only succor one can find!"

Mandus - "We do not need to wait! We can bring forth paradise now! We can speed the passion! With only a small sacrifice we can hold the apocalypse. With just a small sacrifice we can free our shackles and deliver them to paradise now."

Phonograph in the SewersEdit

Found in a dead-end passageway in the Sewers.

Mandus - "But we can save them, we can set them free, we can replace a rotten old world, with a clean new one!"

Professor A - "Mr. Mandus, you sound every bit the fanatic."

Mandus - "Well how can I be otherwise Professor? How can any man of ethics simply stand by and watch this world drown in its own excrement?"

Professor A - "And your Engineer, this visionary with whom you embarked upon this course. Does he share your views?"

Mandus - "Indeed he does, indeed he does! The poor fellow has seen it all before, now this is not the first great civilization he has wept for."

Professor "And so you set about things immediately upon your return."

Mandus "Naturally, naturally, these things cannot be left to rot upon the tree, and sponsors were remarkably easy to find. I tell you Professor, a trail of greed brings rich men to your door, like pigs to truffels!"

Phonograph in the Bilge PumpsEdit

Found right at the Bilge's entrance.

Professor A - "You seem to have undergone quite a profound conversion in Mexico, Mr Mandus."

Mandus - "You could not have seen it yourself and not, Professor. As we disembarked, even through my fever I saw the detritus of this so-called progress. I saw starvation and disease, rot and destruction polluting the waters of the Empire. We are ruiners, you and I and all of us, and we make the world unclean."

Professor A - "And you took it upon yourself to act as redeemer?"

Mandus - "Professor, I would not be so presumptuous. I am merely a conduit. I am constructing an architecture to wrestle our damnation to the ground and smother it with steam."

Phonograph in the ReactorEdit

Found on a table in the Rod Control Room.

Professor A - "And they feel no pain. The process is completely humane?

Mandus - "Humane, Professor? That we judge the acceptable level of suffering by the human condition? Ask the beggar, Professor. Ask the orphan, ask the whore. Ask the starving, Professor, the weak, the sick, the filthy. Ask them to define your humane!"

TriviaEdit

  • In the earlier versions of A Machine for Pigs, the phonograph on the pool table actually appeared on a table in the small room.
  • It would not make sense for a phonograph to exist in the current year Amnesia: Justine takes place in (1858), since phonographs weren't invented until 1877, and the style the phonographs in the game weren't invented until the late 1890's. A possible explanation is that Monsieur had gone further than human psyche in his research, and invented the phonograph earlier in life. This is most likely an error by developer's oversight.
